F-2 Dependent Visa Interview Questions and Answers

14 questions officers actually askTypical interview: 2 to 4 minutes, 6 to 9 questions

An F-2 interview turns on two things the officer cannot see in the paperwork: whether the relationship is genuine, and whether the F-1 student can support one more person. Because F-2 holders cannot work and cannot study full-time, officers also probe what you intend to do all day — an applicant whose plan is really to work or enrol is applying for the wrong visa. Expect questions about your spouse’s program that you may feel are not about you; they are testing whether you know the life you are joining.

The 14 questions

Tap any question to see what it is really testing, how to approach your answer, and the mistake that most often turns it into a refusal.

  1. What the officer is really testing

The most common F-2 concern is a marriage arranged to obtain the visa. Officers listen for a natural account with dates and detail.

    How to answer

Tell it as it happened, with a timeline. Arranged marriages are entirely normal in many countries and officers know this — describe the process honestly rather than reframing it as a love match.

    Common mistake

A rehearsed narrative that both spouses recite identically but cannot expand on. Detail that varies naturally is more convincing than a matching script.

    Likely follow-ups

    • When did you get married?
    • How many people attended the wedding?
    • Where did you live after the wedding?
