B1/B2 Visitor Visa Interview Questions and Answers

16 questions officers actually askTypical interview: 1 to 3 minutes, 5 to 8 questions

B1/B2 interviews are the shortest of any visa category — often under two minutes. There is no I-20 or petition backing your application, so the officer has almost nothing to work with except your answers and your documents. Section 214(b) presumes you intend to immigrate, and with a visitor visa the burden of rebutting that sits almost entirely on demonstrating that your life is anchored at home and your trip has a clear end date.

What the officer is assessing

Purpose of travel
Whether your trip has a specific, finite reason — the foundation of every other answer.
Trip details
Whether the plan is real: dates, places, and who you are seeing.
Who pays
Whether you can afford the trip without working, and where the money comes from.
Ties to home
Job, family, property and obligations — the decisive factor in most B1/B2 outcomes.
Travel history
Past compliance with visa conditions, in the US and elsewhere.

The 16 questions

Tap any question to see what it is really testing, how to approach your answer, and the mistake that most often turns it into a refusal.

  1. What the officer is really testing

The opening question and often the decisive one. The officer is listening for a specific, time-bounded reason rather than open-ended travel.

    How to answer

State the reason in one sentence with a timeframe: a conference on specific dates, a graduation, a wedding, two weeks of sightseeing on a planned route.

    Common mistake

"To visit my relatives and see the country." Open-ended and indistinguishable from someone planning to stay.

    Likely follow-ups

    • How long will you stay?
    • Who are you visiting?
